Wild Dogs on the Loose in Staten Island

Staten Island - Wild dogs mauled and killed four people whose bodies were found over the past two weeks in a park on the edge of Staten  Island, authorities said Monday. In one case, a teenage girl frantically called her sister with her cellphone to plead for help as the attack took place.

Neighbors near Great Kills Park, a partly wooded hilltop park, first found the bodies of a 26-year-old woman and a 1-year-old child in the area on Dec. 29, authorities in Staten Island said.

The woman, Saaya Matsuzaka, was missing her left arm, and prosecutors said that both she and the boy had bled to death and been partially eaten.

Then on Friday visitors to the same park found the bodies of a teenage couple who had also bled to death.

"Experts have established that due to the gravity of the wounds, at least 10 dogs were involved in each attack," Staten Island prosecutors said in a statement.

In the second attack, Amanda Rodriguez, 15, and her boyfriend Stephen Guererro, 16, had gone to the park Friday afternoon.

The girl called her sister Alanis Rodriguez at around 7 p.m. pleading for help.

"Several dogs are attacking us, help me!" the girl screamed. The call then stopped.

Rodriguez told Omni News 1 Television she thought her sister was joking and still doesn't believe her sister was killed by dogs despite the call.

"What kind of dog can tear the skin from your whole arm and leave just bone and if it was an attack dog why didn't it attack her neck?" Rodriguez asked. "What's most shocking is that one of her breasts was mutilated."

She said she later visited the place of the attack and saw no pools of blood. "There needs to be a thorough investigation," she added.

Alexander Mills, president of the local ASPCA, also doubts that dogs could have killed the people found in the park.

"It's not the behavior of street dogs to kill humans," Mills said.

Mills said authorities should focus on sterilizing pets and educating people about pet ownership instead of spreading the idea of killer animals.

"The authorities trapped Beagles, Maltese, Poodles; can you imagine how long it would take for them to kill a person?" he asked.

"A lot of people get tired of their dogs and they simply throw them on the streets," he said. "This is going to create a terrible hate for street dogs and that's going to lead to even more abuse."

Staten Island Public Safety Captain Ronaldo Beniquez told Omni News1 Television that the bodies were not dumped in the area as some had suggested. He said the victims had bite wounds that were inflicted while they were alive and others after they had died.

He warned against visiting the park and said all the dogs in the area will be trapped and checked to see if they were involved.

At least 100 police officers were scouring the park in search of wild dogs. They had trapped 25 by Monday night, including ten females, eight males and seven puppies. The dogs had been living in caves and crevices in the park, prosecutors said.

Experts are testing the dogs' hair for traces of human blood and will also test their stomach contents. Authorities did not say what they would do with the animals.

In this case, animal rights activists have urged authorities not to kill the dogs, instead spaying them and either leaving them in the park or finding them homes.

::The news publishes photos of the dogs. Several looked like domestic pets, others look somewhat more feral::
Twelve Year Old Still Missing: Arthur Penington Kidnapped!
Authorities are still amiss as to how the young boy was kidnapped from his boarding school room December 21st. Arthur Penington was last seen heading to his room after evening meal. While a ward of the state Arther a orphen of deceased parents that passed away September 2008 from a car accident with a drunk driver.
Currently the police have named no suspects, but have named the custodian Jaime Guttierez as a "person of interest".  Mr.  Guttierez is reportedly cooperating with police.  An NYPD spokesman today denied that the police had reached out to the FBI, and said the matter is being handled competently by local authorities.

Foul Play suspected in Long Island City Blaze

At a press conference today police acknowledged that the investigation into the reported explosions and fire in a derelict factory in Queens was "ongoing" but were otherwise tightlipped.  The building at 28-25 Sullivan Street was thought to have been abandoned, but police were called to respond to an incident there late last November.  Subsequent explosions seriously injured at least one officer, who remains hospitalized and in reportedly "stable" condition at an undisclosed location.
Citing the pending investigation, Lead Detective Perelli declined most questions but did admit that the blaze was being treated as an arson, and was emphatic that the injury to a fellow officer would not go unanswered.  "It hits home" he said through clenched teeth "when one of our brothers is attacked for doing his duty."  He later added "We'll get em."
While factory fires have not entirely uncommon amongst the dilapidated remains of the textile industry that long ago left western Queens, this recent blaze comes after a period of relative calm in the area.  One local resident who asked to only be identified as "Marlene" says she is shocked: "This is a quiet neighborhood, a place where you can raise a family.  I just can't believe someone would do something like this!".
Police are asking anyone with any information to call 1 800 FAKE COPS.  Forensics teams and an arson detachment from the FDNY have been seen going in and out of the remains of the building, which remains blocked off as a crime scene.

Shootings, Homicides Already Up

Even though the New Year is barely a week old, January 2013 has already proved as bloody as all of December 2012.  COMPSTAT figures show that the first week of January is the bloodiest in the city in at least three years, with over forty homicides throughout the city, and 147 reported instances of gunfire.
Police are blaming expanded and invigorated gang activity.  While the usual housing project violence continues from Brownsville to Gun Hill continues, the majority of the uptick in violent crimes is focused in a few areas.  Police Gangs Task Force spokeswoman Tamara Lindsay explained to Omnimedia:  "We're seeing a major intensification in violence in Crown Heights, where Black and Hispanic gangs are vying for dominance.  But more surprisingly we're seeing serious violence along Canal Street in Chinatown, which could actually be a sign that our efforts against the major Tongs is working.  We have to expect a temporary increase in violence whenever we take down major organizations--this is really a sign of success!"  If the Triad is breaking up, it hasn't made local residents any more willing to discuss it.  Omnimedia was unable to obtain any comments from the locals.
Few explanations were forthcoming for the spat of gang beatings and two shootings in Riverside Park over the weekend, but local residents fear that even their affluent neighborhood may not be immune to the increasing gang violence engulfing the city.  Eileen Hersch says she fears for her four young children, and Johnathan Chapman opines "We've never had that kind of element here.  I don't know what the city is coming to."
For now the city is hoping that the upswing is a statistical anomaly or the result of the large old orders breaking down, and recently appointed Deputy Police Commissioner William Strogatz vowed to bring order back to the city and make gang crime a priority in the department.

World's Dumbest Bank Robbers

A daring daylight raid of a Capital One Bank near Grand Central Station ended quickly yesterday, with police apprehending three suspects.  The man allegedly barged into the bank lobby toting shotguns and took the manager hostage, demanding he open the vault.  They then loaded up duffel bags with nearly $100,000 in cash.
Unfortunately for the crooks, the savvy bank manager had tripped a silent alarm, and several dozen police and national guard were waiting to greet them outside, with automatic weapons drawn.  The perps were arrested without incident, and now face prison terms of up to thirty years for Armed Robbery, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Grand Larceny, and assorted other charges.

Biz to Pols: Don't Punish Job Creators

Fresh off the news that a "transaction tax" was being considered as a means to raise revenue for the city, several high profile firms have publicly vowed to defeat the reelection campaign of any politician who introduces such a measure to the City Council.  While no formal proposal had been made, the offices of several populist Bronx Councilpersons had been indicating that such a tax might close the city's budget shortfall.
Part of a prepared statement from embattled investment firm Blackstone LLP read: "In this struggling economy, it is absolutely inappropriate to introduce new taxes on the job creators in this city.  Blackstone's investments have revitalized industry and provided, directly and indirectly, thousands of jobs.  A transaction tax would punish us for our success and destroy all the progress we've made along with the Mayor's office in keeping New York City great."
The Mayor has vowed to veto any new taxes on business, while Councilwoman Padilla and her allies whine that deep service cuts have hurt their constituents, and that the budget should not be balanced on the backs of the poor.  Economists panned her proposal as "more damaging to the poor than any service cuts" and "reckless and irresponsible."

In the interest of full disclosure, Omnimedia International acknowledges that Blackstone LLP owns a controlling interest in its print news division.
Religious Revival?

Two independent studies have shown a remarkable increase in religious affiliation amongst New Yorkers over the past five years.  Neither the Columbia nor the NYU study seeks to explain the increase in religiosity, and nearly every measurable religious group has seen its numbers swell recently.  While traditional churches including the Catholic Church have seen steady gains, the most remarkable increase is in the number and size of less traditional faiths.
A huge number of smaller faiths are flourishing, making their temples and holy places in storefronts and old lofts.  From neopagan cults to offshoots of Buddhism, and even one modern day cargo cult, New Yorkers are looking for something more to explain their existence.  The number of religious groups outside the Christian mainstream in New York has nearly tripled since late 2007, and the average size of such cells has increased over 30%, from 19.7 to 27.2 members on average.
Self proclaimed holyman Starchild Phoenix puts the success of his sect, "The Dawn Sun Watchtower" down to community outreach and the failure of traditional religions to connect with the "real human experience of oneness with the universe".
Whatever the case may be, New Yorkers are definitely looking for "something more."

Fans Mourn Pop Sensation: "Gone too soon"

After the a stellar performance of pop-star $a$ha's New Year's Eve performance at MTVs Times Square Studio last week, tragic news has been released about what has happened to her during the after party. Her passing has shaken many of her fans bringing them to tears on the set leaving a shock wave in the aftermath of her death. The death has been officially ruled as heart failure resulting from a drug overdose.  The Coroner's report found a high concentration of mephedrone in her blood, one of the drugs commonly referred to as "Bath Salts".
$a$ha is the most high profile death due to the newest designer drug but hardly the first.  While parents and teachers scramble to provide education to youngsters about the dangers of this drug often found for sale in retail supermarkets and legislators consider new legislation, the drug continues to inspire spectacular and tragic deaths.
Friends of the singer acknowledge that $a$ha struggled with substance abuse, and several of her more popular songs referenced her alcoholism overtly.  At least one friend who asked not to be identified found Bath Salts a surprising culprit, but admitted "$a$ha was crazy, she'd try anything once, and anything she did, she did to the max."
$a$ha, real name is Sasha Daisy Humbert, was only twenty five.
