In the Echoes of Empires world, Equipment is awesome. It's amazing. You should go get it. Here's how it works:
There's four general types of equipment. All equipment falls into these categories (okay I'm lying, vehicles are seperate, but I don't want to talk about them today :-) ):
- Weapons
- Armor
- Skill
- Defense
Please note that equipment is not necessarily an item that is on your person. It can also be flesh crafted on you in some way. See examples under Skills and Defense.
Let's talk about each of them in turn. I'd like to direct your attention to Skill and Defense equipment, because they're not in most other games, and am going to gloss past weapons and armor, because they largely are.
Weapons
Weapons are explained here:

They're used for combat, and not what I really want to talk about today.
Armor

A thing to notice about armor is that it gives you a trait penalty.
Skill & Defense, or the ones that are different (read this part)
On any challenge, other than hitting people (or being hit), you may use one primary equipment, and call one trait from a secondary equipment, so it's usefull to have a second piece lying around, even if it isn't great.
Most characters should have things appropriate to what they do, and some minor defensive equipment. Even a neonate with resources 2, or a raw fledgeling, is going to have something useful. If you find that you aren't calling traits in the same range as your adversaries and antagonists, equipping yourself well can help to close that gap quickly!
Skill
Skill equipement gives a bonus when you are the Acting Character, and the skill is appropriate. Some examples:
- Spiked Heels - Intimidation
- Gorgeous Dress - Leadership
- Power Tie - Leadership
- Painting of the True Landscape of Hell - Lore: Spirit
- Ritual Robes - Occult
- Fragments of the Book of Nod - Lore: Kindred
- Athletic Shoes - Athletics
- Ninja Pajamas - Stealth
- Fleshcrafted and tuned eyes - Investigation
- Viscisituded Brainshpere with tentacles that insert into the brain of the person tied down in your lab that you intend to drive mad - Empathy
- Financial Software - Finance
- George Washington's Rules of Civility (it's a book) - Politcs
There's too many to list, but this should give some ideas. Skill equipment counts as 1 Trait defense equipment for the appropriate Trait Category.
Defense
Defense equipment applies to either Mental or Social. It's used when you're not the Acting Character. Defense equipment can also be used as 1 Trait skill equipment.
Some Examples:
- Nice Suit - Social Defense
- Rosary - Mental Defense
- Backup Brain - Mental Defense
- Fleshcrafted distracting anatomical enhancements (male or female or other) - Social Defense
- "Don't Mess with me" Tattoo - Social Defense
Getting Them
Skill and defense equipement can be made with Crafts/Expression challenges, or purchased for cash money. Here's the chart of cost to buy to bonus. If you want to make them yourself, the challenge to do so is of the same Tier as the bonus it provides.

Any item that grants 6 or more traits will have a slight magical sparkle when examined with aura perception, and that fact would be known to any character with Occult Ability at 3 and Aura Perception, or the Occult Ability at 4 regardless of Auspex. Please don't take that information IC if your character wouldn't know it. Such items are not made by mortal men.
At Character Creation
Characters are permitted to come in with equipment appropriate for their Resources. You can come in with enough stuff to cost 1 month's income, in addition to the money you would get for your first game.
